Upcoming Dates

March 20                                  Parent/Teacher Conferences - NO SCHOOL

March 23-27                            Spring Break - NO SCHOOL

Recommended areas to focus on at home to help your child:

**Highlighted areas are the ones we are either focusing on right now, or the ones that they need the most support with.

Reading every night:

  • focusing on fluency (can they read without stopping to sound out each word),
  • expression (changing their tone of voice to match the punctuation and dialogue of characters), and
  • comprehension (ask your child questions about the story while they read or after they finish).
    • Have them answer inferencing questions that make them think about how the character feels or how their actions impact others to help them expand their understanding.

- Math

  • addition and subtraction, both with and without regrouping (this could be practiced using worksheets or card games like addition or subtraction war)
  • skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 25s (a great activity to practice this is by counting coins)
  • Reading time on an analog clock.
  • Place Value: expanded form, written form, standard form, and block form
  • 3 digit Addition and Subtraction with regrouping
  • 10 more, 10 less, 100 more, 100 less: Write down a set of numbers and have your child calculate what the number would be if you were to have 10 more, 10 less, 100 more, or 100 less.
  • Skip counting by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s, 10s, and 25s
    • Counting money (especially coins) is a great way to practice skip counting.
  • Adding and Subtracting decimals
    • using money to pay for items, whether in a store or pretending at home is a great way for kids to practice adding and subtracting decimals in a hands on, practical way.
  • Multiplication and Division facts
- Writing:
  • spelling (you could also practice this skill playing games like 'Horse' using a basketball, net, and choosing different words to spell).
  • printing mechanics (are the letters legible, is their a clear size difference with capital and lowercase letters, are their spaces between the words)
  • punctuation and capitalization
  • Using nouns, adjectives, and verbs within their writing
  • Opinion writing: have your child tell you their opinions on things either in verbal or written form, but have them give at least 3 reasons why they have that opinion, and have them further explain each reason as well.
  • Persuasive writing: have your child write about something they want, and ask them to give at least three reasons why they should get it, and have them add lots of detail to their writing.
  • Writing letters, focusing on formatting and expanding ideas.

Literacy:

- Here is the link to the website where we have been listening to the podcast, incase your child has missed an episode and wants to catch up: https://gzmshows.com/shows/mars-patel/#listen

- We continued listening to the story podcast, The Unexplainable disappearance of Mars Patel, and each day we have focused on a different comprehensive strategy.

  • We focused on how the voice actors change their tone of voice to express emotions, and how the speed they spoke at can help convey those feelings. When they spoke fast it could mean scared, happy, worried, excited. When they spoke slowly, it could mean that they were sad, mad, confused, etc.
  • We practiced our dictation skills by writing down quotes from the characters that stood out to us.
  • We completed a second PRE, DURING, POST page where everyone made predictions before listening to the episode, and they wrote down important information and main events while they were listening, and then reflected on the episode afterwards and made predictions about major events.
  • There are giant creatures in the podcast called Tardigrades, that are a mix between a spider and a wolf. We imagined what these creatures would look like and drew them.
- We completed a picture prompt to show parents at conferences, and completed a mini book about St. Patricks Day. The mini book had us practice lots of different literacy skills such as identifying metephors, main idea, and understanding vocabulary.
- We learned about Limericks. We used a template to write our own Limerick, and will continue to write them after the break.

Math:

- We spent 3 days reviewing everything we have learned about Multiplication and Division, and then completed our unit test.

- We began our next unit: Measurement. We learned about the different types of measurement systems (Metric and Imperial) and how our country uses a mix of both due to our connections to Europe and the USA. We practiced using a ruler properly and reading its measurements, then went around the room recording measurements of various objects in the classroom.

- We have been beginning every math lesson with our warm-up brochures, where students practice their multiplication facts for each grouping. So far, they have completed the warm-ups for multiples of 1, 2, 3 most of them have finished for multiples of 4 and 5, and some have begun multiples of 6 and 7.

Science/Social:

- We built Leprechaun traps in Science, and then spent the rest of the week learning about the different types of simple machines and where we see and use them in our world. We also learned about acceleration and magnitude.

- In Social, we discussed how Alberta was shaped by settlers and the type of life settlers would have experienced when they first came to Canada and Alberta. Then we discussed why people might want to immigrate to Alberta now, the type of life they experience here now vs. then, and we talked about the contributions that immigrants have made to shape our province and country today.

Art:

We made various St. Patricks Day themed crafts, such as a 4 leaf clover ball, and origami clover to add to our leprechaun traps, and today we made "mini me's" that the class can take on their adventures during Spring Break.

Health:

- We have been learning about Manners and how they are important in every part of our life. We talked about why we use our manners, how they help us communicate with others and how not using them can send the wrong message to people (ex. bumping into someone by accident, and not saying "I'm sorry that was an accident", can make the other person think we did it on purpose). We will continue learning about manners after the break and continue to practice them everyday.
