*This week I sent home some extra activities that they can do at home to practice skills taught in class. They were each given:

  • A paper with links that provide a list of science based experiments that they can do at home
  • March reading bingo page
  • A reading comprehension page about the boy who cried wolf, there are questions on the back
  • A reading comprehension booklet that they can complete with books from home
  • Some students were sent home with math pages if they needed additional time to complete the work
**The class has also earned all of their marbles again, and we will be having a mini class party on Monday. For the class party, they have chosen to pick their own seats, go to the computer lab, bring a stuffie/toy (that must be able to fit on a piece of paper so that they have room on their desk to work), and to watch part of a movie during snack (we will be watching nemo).

Recommended areas to focus on at home to help your child:

**Highlighted areas are the ones we are either focusing on right now, or the ones that they need the most support with.

Reading every night:

  • focusing on fluency (can they read without stopping to sound out each word),
  • expression (changing their tone of voice to match the punctuation and dialogue of characters), and
  • comprehension (ask your child questions about the story while they read or after they finish).
    • Have them answer inferencing questions that make them think about how the character feels or how their actions impact others to help them expand their understanding.

- Math

  • addition and subtraction, both with and without regrouping (this could be practiced using worksheets or card games like addition or subtraction war)
  • skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 25s (a great activity to practice this is by counting coins)
  • Reading time on an analog clock.
  • Place Value: expanded form, written form, standard form, and block form
  • 3 digit Addition and Subtraction with regrouping
  • 10 more, 10 less, 100 more, 100 less: Write down a set of numbers and have your child calculate what the number would be if you were to have 10 more, 10 less, 100 more, or 100 less.
  • Skip counting by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s, 10s, and 25s
    • Counting money (especially coins) is a great way to practice skip counting.
  • Adding and Subtracting decimals
    • using money to pay for items, whether in a store or pretending at home is a great way for kids to practice adding and subtracting decimals in a hands on, practical way.
  • Multiplication and Division facts
- Writing:
  • spelling (you could also practice this skill playing games like 'Horse' using a basketball, net, and choosing different words to spell).
  • printing mechanics (are the letters legible, is their a clear size difference with capital and lowercase letters, are their spaces between the words)
  • punctuation and capitalization
  • Using nouns, adjectives, and verbs within their writing
  • Opinion writing: have your child tell you their opinions on things either in verbal or written form, but have them give at least 3 reasons why they have that opinion, and have them further explain each reason as well.
  • Persuasive writing: have your child write about something they want, and ask them to give at least three reasons why they should get it, and have them add lots of detail to their writing.
  • Writing letters, focusing on formatting and expanding ideas.

Literacy:

- Here is the link to the website where we have been listening to the podcast, incase your child has missed an episode and wants to catch up: https://gzmshows.com/shows/mars-patel/#listen

- We continued listening to the story podcast, The Unexplainable disappearance of Mars Patel, and each day we have focused on a different comprehensive strategy.

  • We drew symbols that represented characters, settings, and main plot ideas, and labeled our symbols to explain our choices.
  • We spent a couple of episodes drawing the new main characters that have been introduced to the story.
- We learned to write both upper and lowercase L in cursive
- We completed a punctuation challenge to work on editing sentences that were missing capitals, periods, and commas.
- We edited our Pink Shirt Day comprehension questions from last week, and focused on formatting our work so that it is clear and legible, and also addressing the questions we are answering using information from the text.
- We continued to practice answering comprehension questions, by completing a set of questions that paired with an image.

Math:

- We continued our unit on Multiplication and Division and focused on a new strategy that involves breaking numbers into more manageable chunks that we can solve faster. Rather than trying to solve 8x7, we can break the 8 into 3 and 5, multiple those numbers by 7 (3x7, 5x7) and then add the answers together. we practiced this for a couple of days and then focused on basic facts and word problems.

- We have been beginning every math lesson with our warm-up brochures, where students practice their multiplication facts for each grouping. So far, they have completed the warm-ups for multiples of 1, 2, 3 most of them have finished for multiples of 4 and 5, and some have begun multiples of 6.

Science/Social:

- In science, we completed a Forces check-in that asked students to write 2 examples for each type of force (applied, tension, friction, and elastic/spring) and then draw a picture to match their examples. We will continue to look at forces and simple machines next week.

- In Social, we have been looking at the different groups of people that lived in Alberta during settlement (Indigenous, Metis, Francophones, and Settlers. We have been learning about their different cultures and traditions, their ways of life, and why they chose Alberta for their homes/communities. We talked about why people came to Canada, and looked at the different immigration posters from that time and compared them to the living conditions of Europe at that time.

Art:

- We completed our colour theory houses and then started a new project, Rainbow Zentangles. For this project, we started by drawing a paintbrush and learned different shading techniques to make the brush look 3D. Then we glued the paintbrushes onto a larger piece of paper, and drew 2 parallel, wavy lines going across the page. We then looked at the colourwheel, and talked about how rainbows flow from one colour to another in specific order (red and green would never be next to each other) and then I showed the class how to blend pencil crayons together to have a smooth rainbow ombre. We made a smooth rainbow ombre in the 'paint smear' that goes across our page, and will fill the rest of the page with black and white zentangle designs.
