Thank you to the parents that came with us to Heritage Park this week and made the field trip possible!

Upcoming Dates

November 26               Fun Lunch - Subway

November 27               NO SCHOOL for KINDERGARTEN

November 27 & 28       Parent/Teacher Conferences

Recommended areas to focus on at home to help your child:

Reading every night:

  • focusing on fluency (can they read without stopping to sound out each word),
  • expression (changing their tone of voice to match the punctuation and dialogue of characters), and
  • comprehension (ask your child questions about the story while they read or after they finish).

- Math

  • addition and subtraction, both with and without regrouping (this could be practiced using worksheets or card games like addition or subtraction war)
  • skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 25s (a great activity to practice this is by counting coins)
  • Reading time on an analog clock.
  • Place Value: expanded form, written form, standard form, and block form
- Writing:
  • spelling (you could also practice this skill playing games like 'Horse' using a basketball, net, and choosing different words to spell).
  • printing mechanics (are the letters legible, is their a clear size difference with capital and lowercase letters, are their spaces between the words)
  • punctuation and capitalization

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Literacy:

- We brainstormed possible story ideas for a picture as a class, and then the next day we had 45 minutes to write our own story to match the picture prompt.

- We wrote different verbs that matched the actions of various animals, and then spent the rest of the week reviewing and engaging in activities to practice sorting verbs, nouns, and adjectives.

- When we were on our field trip to Heritage Park, we did a quilting activity and had a chance to write about the quilting pattern that we made.

Math:

- We continued with our place value unit and practiced using and identifying numbers in standard form, written form, expanded form, and block form. We will continue to practice these skills and complete a mid-point check-in next week.

- We practiced our addition and subtraction skills by solving standard equations and word problems. We will be continuing this practice next week.

- To support our learning, we have been listening to the place value song from Numberock. It has been a helpful tool for learning the place value spots. Here is the link if you would like to listen to it at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MloZcl1JJEI&list=RDMloZcl1JJEI&start_radio=1

Social:

- We have begun learning about the 6 different regions in Alberta: the Boreal Forest, Foothills, Grasslands, Rocky Mountains, Parkland, and Canadian Shield. We identified them on the map of Alberta and discussed which region we live in our have visited with family. We also began our independent research booklets where students will be reading through provided resources to find information on each region and write it down, and then draw a picture to match the region.

Science:

- We have begun learning about the Fossil layer in our Earth, and we had a chance to explore websites posted on our google classroom, to learn about Fossils and different types of dinosaurs.

Art:

- We made another optical illusion that involved oil pastels and cutting up and rearranging the pieces to create a tree using negative space! We have talked a lot about how implied lines and negative space can create art, and we put those skills to use in this project. We first made our backgrounds using oil pastels, and I walked the class through creating a winter scene using warm and cool colours. Once the art was complete, we cut our drawings up into smaller sections and glued them onto a black peice of paper. By leaving space in between the pieces, that negative space created the illusion of a tree silhouette!
