Recommended areas to focus on at home to help your child:
- Last week I sent home extra practice sheets for math and reading, to support what we have been working on in class. Students can work on these at their own pace at home, I will not be taking them in for marks.
- Reading every night:
- focusing on fluency (can they read without stopping to sound out each word),
- expression (changing their tone of voice to match the punctuation and dialogue of characters), and
- comprehension (ask your child questions about the story while they read or after they finish).
- Math
- addition and subtraction, both with and without regrouping (this could be practiced using worksheets or card games like addition or subtraction war)
- skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 25s (a great activity to practice this is by counting coins)
- Reading time on an analog clock.
- Place Value: expanded form
- spelling (you could also practice this skill playing games like 'Horse' using a basketball, net, and choosing different words to spell).
- printing mechanics (are the letters legible, is their a clear size difference with capital and lowercase letters, are their spaces between the words)
- punctuation and capitalization

Literacy:
- We reviewed our knowledge of the floss rule and completed a dictation of a sentence and 5 individual words that follow this spelling pattern.
- There was a substitute teacher in on Thursday, so everyone wrote predictions on what they thought I was doing that day, they had some very fun guesses!
- We reviewed our knowledge of adjectives and completed a mini check-in to demonstrate our knowledge.
- Since it was a very short week, we did not do Friday Letters.
Math:
- With the substitute on Thursday, we used our review booklets and continued to practice skills that we have already learned in grade 2 (i.e. basic facts, counting money, identifying patterns, etc.).
- We continued with our place value unit and practiced using and identifying numbers in standard form on a place value chart, breaking numbers into expanded form, and learned how to write numbers in word form (i.e. 32, 365 = Thirty-two thousand three hundred sixty-five) and how to identify and write number in standard form by reading its name (i.e. Four hundred eighty thousand, one hundred ninety-nine = 480, 199).
- To support our learning, we have been listening to the place value song from Numberock. It has been a helpful tool for learning the place value spots. Here is the link if you would like to listen to it at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MloZcl1JJEI&list=RDMloZcl1JJEI&start_radio=1
Social:
- We reviewed what continents are and identified all 7 on a map, we identified which continent our country is on and the name of our country, then we identified our province (along with what type of landforms we have in our province and discussed why we are called a "landlocked" province), then we talked about our city and our community within our city. To finish the lesson, we drew our houses to finish the "my home" section in our "My spot on the map" flip-book.
Science:
- With our substitute teacher, we joined Mrs. Coleman's class for a science lesson!
Art:
- We have been learning about optical illusions and drew some ourselves! We drew an image that looks like a duck one way, and a rabbit when you rotate the page. Then we turned the word fall and transformed it into a fall scene.
