Recommended areas to focus on at home to help your child:

- This week I sent home extra practice sheets for math and reading, to support what we have been working on in class. Students can work on these at their own pace at home, I will not be taking them in for marks.

Reading every night:

  • focusing on fluency (can they read without stopping to sound out each word),
  • expression (changing their tone of voice to match the punctuation and dialogue of characters), and
  • comprehension (ask your child questions about the story while they read or after they finish).

- Math

  • addition and subtraction, both with and without regrouping (this could be practiced using worksheets or card games like addition or subtraction war)
  • skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 25s (a great activity to practice this is by counting coins)
  • Reading time on an analog clock.
  • Place Value: expanded form
- Writing:
  • spelling (you could also practice this skill playing games like 'Horse' using a basketball, net, and choosing different words to spell).
  • printing mechanics (are the letters legible, is their a clear size difference with capital and lowercase letters, are their spaces between the words)
  • punctuation and capitalization

Literacy:

- We reviewed our knowledge of syllables and learned the rabbit rule to help us understand how to split the syllables in a word.

- We learned how to write cursive Gg and Qq.

- We made a brain dump and a good copy of our oral stories. Our oral stories allowed us to share the memories and stories of events that shaped who we are.

- We finished the week with our Friday Letters. We will continue to do these every week, so that you and your child can communicate through letters and learn about what we have done at school.

Math:

- We have moved onto our next unit: Place Value. We practiced using and identifying numbers in standard form on a place value chart, and have been learning these placements up to the Millions. We also began breaking apart 5 and 6 digit numbers into expanded form, and learning how to read and write them (i.e., separating the numbers in groups of three using a coma or a space. Ex. 582, 196). We will continue this unit next week and practice writing and reading numbers in word form and base ten block form.

- To support our learning, we have been listening to the place value song from Numberock. It has been a helpful tool for learning the place value spots. Here is the link if you would like to listen to it at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MloZcl1JJEI&list=RDMloZcl1JJEI&start_radio=1

Social:

- We have been learning about the relationship between the European Settlers, the Canadian Government, and the Indigenous People of our region. We discussed why the settlers came to Canada, and how the government created treaties with the Indigenous people. We discussed what a treaty was, the different treaty regions we have in Alberta, and the traditions that went along with signing a treaty. Our class joined Mrs. Coleman's class to make bannock together, and we all made beaded bracelets for our oral stories to represent the wompom belts and story ropes that are used in Indigenous cultures. Today, we got the two classes together and made a class treaty detailing the promises that the teachers and students of both classes will keep throughout the year. We all signed our class treaty, and then shared our oral story bracelets with peers from both classes.

- We got together with our buddy class and learned about Remembrance day, and did an activity to show what Remembrance day means for each of us. Throughout the week, we learned about the poppy, and what different coloured poppies represent, along with the importance of having remembrance day ceremonies and recognizing those who fought for our freedoms. We completed some art activities for remembrance day, and made a visual journal page for the poem "In Flanders Field."

Science:

- We joined Mrs. Coleman's class for a lesson on the Slow Changes to the Earth, and discussed the different types of processes that move and shape the Earth. We discussed how weathering, erosion, and deposition all have different roles in this, and made a visual journal page to show our knowledge on the subject.

- We talked about the Grand Canyon, and how it was formed through erosion; then looked at photos of the famouse landmark from space, and arial view from a plane, and then what it looked like at ground level at the top of the canyon.

Art:

- We made an agamograph for Remembrance day and drew poppies in our visual journal to create a boarder around the poem "In Flanders Field."

- We learned about optical illusions and looked at a few examples, trying to find the hidden images in each. Then we made our own optical illusion hands for our visual journal covers. We talked about how it takes a lot of precision to create an optical illusion, and everyone did a fantastic job!
