Recommended areas to focus on at home to help your child:

Reading every night:

  • focusing on fluency (can they read without stopping to sound out each word),
  • expression (changing their tone of voice to match the punctuation and dialogue of characters), and
  • comprehension (ask your child questions about the story while they read or after they finish).

- Basic math facts:

  • addition and subtraction, both with and without regrouping (this could be practiced using worksheets or card games like addition or subtraction war)
  • skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 25s (a great activity to practice this is by counting coins)
- Writing:
  • spelling (you could also practice this skill playing games like 'Horse' using a basketball, net, and choosing different words to spell).
  • printing mechanics (are the letters legible, is their a clear size difference with capital and lowercase letters, are their spaces between the words)
  • punctuation
- Reading time on an analog clock.

Morning Activity:

- Finishing our weaving project for art.

Literacy:

- We reviewed our knowledge of adjectives and syllables.

- We wrote our Friday letters and included details about last week, since we did not write letters on the 26th due to the assembly.

Math:

- We practiced reading time on an analog clock and learned how to read time on a 24 hour clock. We wrapped up our time unit today by completing a unit test, and we will continue to practice all of the skills we learned throughout the year.

Social:

- We continued to study the different landforms throughout Alberta and made a map in our visual journals to see where the landforms are located in our province. We briefly talked about how these landforms are formed and will continue to learn about this in science. We explored different regions of our province and international areas to view the different landforms, and discussed some of the natural disasters that have occurred (ex. Frank slide).

- Since the class earned a class party, we watched a little bit of the movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmeron to connect with our social curriculum. We have been learning about Alberta in the past, and the movie includes details very similar to our past in western Canada (even though it was set in the US) and helps kids visualize what the land may have looked like before and during settlement.

Science:

- Mrs. Coleman came back to our class to continue a science lesson about different types of natural disasters and how they occur and shape our world, while I joined her class to teach them about Alberta's landforms.

Art:

- We continued working on our weaving project where we designed landscapes using colour blocking. Some students have completed their landscapes and created a legend explaining what each colour of yarn represents in their landscape.
