Recommended areas to focus on at home to help your child:
- Reading every night:
- focusing on fluency (can they read without stopping to sound out each word),
- expression (changing their tone of voice to match the punctuation and dialogue of characters), and
- comprehension (ask your child questions about the story while they read or after they finish).
- Basic math facts:
- addition and subtraction, both with and without regrouping (this could be practiced using worksheets or card games like addition or subtraction war)
- skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 25s (a great activity to practice this is by counting coins)
- spelling (you could also practice this skill playing games like 'Horse' using a basketball, net, and choosing different words to spell).
- printing mechanics (are the letters legible, is their a clear size difference with capital and lowercase letters, are their spaces between the words)
- punctuation
Literacy:
- We reviewed our knowledge of open and closed syllables and practiced counting syllables in a word, and identifying which syllables were open and closed.
- We completed a Halloween themed crossword and word scramble, where students had to make as many words as they could using the letters JACKOLANTERN.
Math:
- We worked on a Haunted Hotel math booklet, where each student was the proud owner of a Haunted Hotel. They had to design advertisements for them, calculate how much a few nights would costs for the monsters to stay (and how much change they would need to give back with the money spent). Then they designed the floor plan for the monster party, along with who the winners were for the spooky games.
Social:
- We began an activity before the strike called "My spot on the map." We began with the continents of the world, the map of Canada, and this week we found our province and drew our city - mainly focusing on the famous landmarks (i.e. the Calgary Tower, Saddledome, etc). Our final step will be our home here in McKenzie Towne, which we will finish next week.
- The class had a class party, before the strike, and we started watching the movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmeron, which connects with our social curriculum. We watched the last few scenes of the movie to finish it off and the class really enjoyed it!
Science:
- We joined Mrs. Coleman's class for a lesson on the Slow Changes to the Earth. We learned about the different types of Erosion and Deposition, along with the different landforms that are created as a result of these processes. The students were then paired up, and completed a research page using the slides provided on Google Classroom.
Art:
- We completed a Halloween Friends guided drawing in our visual journals, and created origami Jack-O-Lanterns.
