 Important Dates:

- Friday, September 26, the grade 3 students will be leading the Orange Shirt Day assembly.  Please feel free to join us for this important event to honour the experiences of children who attended residential schools.

Morning tubs:

- Map out the route that Terry Fox ran during his marathon of hope.

- Draw a portrait of someone at your table group.

- Solve the coded riddle.

Literacy:

- We read the story "My Unbelievable Summer" and created elaborate stories about what 'might' have happened in our summers.

- We began practicing our cursive writing and learned how to do an upper and lowercase 'a' and 'c'.

- We learned how to identify and highlight key information in a passage in order to answer questions about Terry Fox.

- We practiced creative writing using a picture prompt.

- We wrote our first Friday Letter. This will be something that we practice weekly, where students write a letter to you about their week and you respond to their letter! This will give you and your child the opportunity to communicate about their week and have a fun keepsake by the end of the year.

- We reviewed some concepts from grade two, such as long and short vowel sounds and nouns. We practiced these concepts throughout the week using mini whiteboards, our writing notebooks, and verbal comprehension.

Math:

- We began our Time unit by discussing how time is measured using a calendar. We discussed how it is measured in seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, and centuries. Afterwards, we completed a calendar activity and throughout the week we worked through different concepts such as am/pm and analog vs. digital.

- We have continued to practice our basic math facts from grade 2, focusing on addition and subtraction with regrouping. **If you would like your child to practice math at home, I would recommend focusing on these areas.

Social:

- We began learning about maps and the key features they include such as a compass rose, a title, legend, and symbols. We made a map of our classroom, and then later in the week we went on a community walk with Mrs. Coleman's class and made a map of our community.

Science:

- We began learning about the Scientific Method and how scientists around the world use these steps to ensure that experiments are done properly. We made a visual journal page about it and will continue to learn and practice these steps throughout the year.

Art:

- We completed our All About Me posters and hung them on the wall outside our classroom.

- We started to create our artwork for the upcoming Orange Shirt Day assembly.
